Cheek Implants (Malar/Submalar Implants)

Cheek Implants New YorkThe new aesthetic in the modern world for cosmetic rejuvenation surgery is to make a person look younger, not just to tighten up the face or achieve the "face caught in the wind tunnel" look. One of the most challenging problems that a surgeon must address has to do with loss of volume as the face ages. Sometimes, injectible fillers can meet the need of the patient. There are times, however when the volume of loss will not be appropriately managed by fillers. In these situations, Dr. Prasad may recommend a cheek implant to restore volume and help with under eye hollowness.

How to tell if Cheek Implants are right for you?
You can do two different maneuvers to see whether cheek implants will be beneficial. Before you start, ask yourself the following questions:
  • Has the shape of your face changed as you have grown older?
  • Have you lost the oval shape you had when you were younger and has it become more square or angular?
  • Does your appearance improve considerably when you smile?

  • To Do: Look at yourself in the mirror and smile. Place your fingers on your cheeks and hold them in place as you stop smiling. When you let go, notice where they droop. If there is a significant amount of droop, a cheek implant may be a good choice for you.

To Do: Lie down on a flat surface and hold a mirror in front of your face. Tilt your chin forward and notice where your cheeks lay. This is what a midface implant will help you achieve. You should be able to see that your cheek pads have returned to where they were when you were younger.

Frequently Asked Questions
Dr. Prasad prefers to use silicone implants because they have a rigid shape that will last for years. They are soft and will mold well with the facial structures in the area. There are two main types of implants called "malar" and "submalar". "Malar" means cheek and this type of implant will add volume to the cheekbone. Submalar is the part of the cheek under the eye and to the side of the nose. This implant does little for cheek bone augmentation. Some patients elect to have implants that address both areas for maximal fullness in this area.
Q How are they put in?
A They are place through a small opening from the inside of the mouth so there is no scar on the outside.
Q How long do implants last?
A Since the implants are fixed with a microscrew to the cheekbones below, they should be able to last for decades. Should you change your mind about them, they are easily removable with local anesthesia.
Q What size implant do you use?
A Size varies according to the shape of the face and the patients desired goals.
Q How long does it take to get a cheek implant?
A The procedure can take about 30 minutes. Local anesthesia with IV sedation as needed is used during the procedure.
Q How long is the recovery?
A Generally a patient is better within 3 to 4 days although smiling, eating, puckering can be a little painful for the first week or so. Usually a patient can return to work in about a week.
